Learning Management SystemView the Heartland Centers LMS Newsletter The Heartland Centers (HC) have developed the HC Learning Management System (LMS) to help achieve the goal of assessing and improving the preparedness and capacity of the public health workforce. The LMS provides each individual a free, personal account that provides them the opportunity to assess their own level of competency regarding various public health issues; develop a training plan and access competency-based courses and other materials to improve their competency. The LMS tracks their professional development as they move through coursework, and provides personalized printable reports of their progress. In addition, downloadable, printable certificates for eligible courses and programs are available online upon completion. Currently the system houses over 150 public-health related courses in a variety of formats. Most courses are free of charge. To respond to the dynamic public health environment, the HC Learning Management System will constantly evolve adding courses and information relevant to emerging challenges in the field. The Learning Management System also provides the unique feature allowing independent agencies to register and manage all of their employees in a designated agency area. They can then choose the roles and assessments for their employees and track their employees progress in the system as they complete courses. The benefits to agencies include reduced training cost and travel time versus traditional face-to-face training, cross-training employees for new roles, introducing new employees into the field of public health, and creating achievable training plans. This service is offered free of charge to agencies wishing to participate. For more information on enrolling your agency, contact LMS Coordinator Christy McFarland at 314-977-8295 or mcfarlcm@slu.edu. Emerging
Leaders Institute
The Emerging Leaders Institute is sponsored by the UIC-SPH Center for
Public Health Practice and the Heartland Centers at St. Louis University,
School of Public Health. The Institute is part of a continuum of
training programs that strengthen the public health workforce through
coordinated training and organizational development. The Emerging
Leaders Institute builds public health practice by combining cutting
edge face-to-face training with individual infrastructure improvement
projects. As the conclusion of the program, Fellows will be prepared
to assume leadership positions within their agencies, and will have
the skills necessary to lead collaborative initiatives that characterize
public health practice.
