The National Public Health Leadership
Programme (England)
The National Public Health Leadership
Programme aims to ensure that public
sector decisions will routinely take into
account the health of the community or
population served. The Programme commenced
as a pilot in 1998. It now offers
a multi-agency and multi-professional
programme for leaders in the National
Health Service as well as other public
and voluntary sector organizations. It is
sponsored by the NHS Leadership Centre.
The focus is on leadership within and
beyond one’s organization into the community
they serve. The year-long programme
content builds upon communication,
decision-making, team-building,
and analytical skills. It also focuses on
content such as organizational cultures
and behaviors, various leadership styles,
and collaborative leadership. Participants
are allocated to facilitated learning sets
for the duration of the programme. A
special feature of the program is the opportunity
to tackle a real leadership
problem in an organization well outside
the participants' normal field of experience e.g., the Stock Market,
Music
Industry, Manufacturing. This exercise
enables participants to use their new/refreshed leadership and team working
skills to tackle a problem, rather than
their prior knowledge of the sector. To
date, there have been no international
scholars-we would welcome them!
