North
Central
Public Health Leadership Institute
The mission of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (UMN
SPH) is to improve the health of populations through research, education,
and community outreach. The goal of the North Central Public Health Leadership
Institute (NCPHLI) is to contribute to this mission by challenging and
educating public health leaders to address complex public health issues
in new and innovative ways.
This will be accomplished by gathering 20 public health leaders from
Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota into a cohort group each year.
The cohort will look at the following public health practice competencies:
- working with legislatures and other public bodies
- creating organizational change
- communicating risk
- engaging and activating communities
- building relationships with medicine
The cohort will participate in the following activities:
- Small group (five people) discussions (one and one-half days over
two sessions) in their home states facilitated by faculty from the
UMN SPH. These discussions will focus on the real issues of the participants,
but also look at new leadership approaches.
- Online discussion groups.
- Attendance at one week of the UMN Public Health Institute (June 2-6,
2008) during which time the participants will take a regular course
for half of each day and then participate in the cohort of 20 group
for more case discussions and work with instructors in each of the
five competency areas the other half of each day.
Cost of the program:
Tuition - $685 - $735 (depending on whether taken for credit
or not). Scholarships will cover this cost.
Lodging - $250 for five nights on campus.
