Southwest
Public Health Leadership Institute
The Southwest Public Health Leadership
Institute (SWPHLI), hosted by the University
of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman
College of Public Health is dedicated
to improving the health of communities in
border and bi-national communities, tribal
health programs, and state and county
public health systems. The SWPHLI provides
leadership workshops and collaborative
leadership training for emerging
and mid-level public health leaders.
In collaboration with numerous partners,
the SWPHLI is currently developing a
Border Health Leadership Program
(BHLP) to serve public health leaders
throughout the US-Mexico border region.
The BHLP will provide advanced leadership
training, emphasizing the development
of collaborative and trans-border
leadership skills, for members of the USMexico
Border Health Commission and
other public health leaders working in the
border region.
Objectives of the BHLP are to:
1. Develop a yearlong, team-based,
action-learning, leadership
development program for Border
Health Commissioners and other
public health/health leaders in
the region
2. Design the program based on
previous public health leadership
needs assessments and the
expressed needs of participants
3. Facilitate team-based projects focused
on complex, real-world, border/bi-national public health challenges
4. Increase participants' public health
leadership knowledge, skills
and abilities
5. Leverage resources to create a
sustainable program
