Public
Health Leadership Institute of Florida
The Public Health Leadership Institute of
Florida (PHLIF) at the University of
South Florida’s College of Public Health
is dedicated to providing the finest leadership
development possible to those who
are, and who will be, active in improving
the health of Floridians. The Institute is
founded on the belief that excellence in
training and development will significantly
enhance the leadership abilities of individuals
working to improve the health of
our communities. As a result of their leadership
training, graduates will strengthen
the capacity of the public health system to
improve the health of the people of their
communities and the state.
The PHLIF is a year-long intense study of
the key topics in leadership, complemented
by activities and exercises emphasizing
the practice of public health. The focus of
the program is to provide local, state and
private sector public health professionals
the opportunity to develop their leadership
skills regardless of role, level, or area
of expertise. The program emphasizes self
awareness, and growth and mastery of
essential leadership skills such as visioning,
team building, communication, and
political effectiveness. Each scholar completes
a personal project either in their
community or home agency. The goal of
the Leadership Institute is to provide an
effective balance of theory and practice in
leadership which can be immediately
applied to confronting and resolving the
most urgent public health issues in
Florida.
